HEN
GERMAN PHOTO-AGENT Ernest Mayer landed in New York during
the Great Depression, he never could have imagined the impact
his little portfolio of candid sequential photographs would
have on America.
TIME INC. PUBLISHER Henry R. Luce, dreaming of producing
a "picture-story magazine", bought the reproduction rights
to the entire portfolio on the spot, kindling a partnership
that gave birth to both Black Star and a magazine called LIFE.

NOW, FOR NEARLY THREE-QUARTERS of a century, Black Star
has served as the primary incubator for the world's best photojournalists.
Witnesses to both the mundane and the momentous, their job
is to capture a moment in time.
WE HAVE PIECED together these moments to form a decade-by-decade
mosaic of human culture, crises, and experiences as seen from
the other side of the camera's lens... |
